Once every few years I experience something akin to a miracle. Just at the point when the world stage is so disturbing it is hard to imagine what it will be like to raise children, my community stands up for love. A family tragedy becomes the inspiration for what appears to be the best block party ever.

On my last safari I watched the swimming lions of the Duba Plains as they stalked and scanned the banks of an Okavango Delta waterway, watching for any signal or sign of life that might give away the position of a lethal predator – a hungry croc barely submerged waiting and watching as well.

The condition our condition is in…. As I slipped the kayak into the cool clear water of the Santa Ynez River, I starred at the cottony clouds and imagined myself an early explorer to this magical area. Just upstream I peered at the seemingly haphazard construct of a beaver dam that is actually an engineering marvel. A doe and fawn bounded away from the water as I approached. I wondered what other wildlife in the land of plenty watched from the safety of the Cottonwood and Sycamore trees along the bank.
